Research suggests that nearly two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight and about one thirds are obese, and Ireland has almost matched these worrying statistics. Although this subject is touched on in magazines, TV and is prevalent in our education system obesity levels are on the rise. People who are obese are prone to develop diabetes, kidney and liver related issues, low energy levels, skin problems and many many more illnesses. According to Ayurveda the first step to conquer obesity is to exercise regularly. Exercise helps to burn sto ...

Healthy Eating

Posted: 2010-12-22 00:00:00 Continuing with healthy eating, today I would like to discuss the procedures one should follow in order to consume food in a healthy way. Before you eat you should bath or at least wash hands, face and feet. The dining area should be clean and free from all kinds of distractions. Eating while watching TV is completely against the principles of Ayurveda, also try to face the direction of sun when eating because the sun is the ultimate provider of food. Feed others or make sure others have their portion before you start eating. Feeding animals or birds prior to eating yourself is considered morally important in some cultures. Concentrate and eat with confidence and avoid talking and laughing during eating. Make sure all the six tastes are present in the menu.  Approach the foo ...

Eating in an Ayurvedic way

Posted: 2010-12-15 16:30:00 According to Ayurveda, we are what we eat. “When diet is wrong medicine is of no use and when diet is correct medicine is of no need.” Food is such an important thing in Ayurveda. Food and drink when taken in a proper manner promotes growth, life, intelligence and health but when it is taken in improper manner and time, it acts as the root cause of diseases. The improperly taken food leads to indigestion and thereby accumulation of toxins in the body leading to diseases. Seven things should be considered while choosing the food according to Ayurveda. First is the property of the food which means whether it is light or heavy to digest. As we all know food like fried meat is heavy compared to fish, wheat is heavier than rice and steamed vegetables are lighter than rice. ...

Winter is Good!

Posted: 2010-12-10 10:00:00 According to Ayurveda there are six seasons and winter is supposedly the best period to improve the health and immunity of a person. If that’s true then why do so many of us suffer from colds and flu’s at this time of year. Let’s have a deeper look into what happens in winter season according to Ayurveda. The human body is a representation of the universe. Whatever is happening in the universe also happens inside our body. When the duration of the day decreases and temperature falls our body tries to protect itself by increasing the Kapha which is the life force responsible for the bulk, structure, stability, strength, lubrication, etc. So this is a season where Kapha start to accumulate in the body which if aggravated results in cold and flu. Again this is time ...
