Summer has Arrived!

Posted: 2012-06-06 00:00:00 It’s that time of year when we get to bare a bit more skin than usual. If you're summer plans involve a bit of jet setting or keeping it local, always remember to apply the same skin care precautions at home and abroad.

We are all well aware of the steps we have to take to keep our skin safe in the sun.  The important part is to carry them out!

Everyone who spends time outdoors should be aware of the harmful UV rays.  It could be as simple as hanging up a load washing in the garden to sunning yourself on a tropical beach.

You can easily find a happy medium when it comes to dealing with the effects of UV rays.  The key is to be consistent.  Our bodies need the sun to help produce Vitamin D which is important for bone health, immune function and blood formation.  A balanced diet rich in nuts and seeds which are packed with Zinc will help maintain healthy skin.

The essential steps we need to apply:
  • Never let your skin redden or burn
  • Never use a sun bed to increase your Vitamin D levels
  • If you have fair skin take extra care
  • Cover up with clothing
  • Seek shade between 11am and 3pm
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses
  • Wear sunscreen SPF 15 or higher with UVA protection
Don’t forget to check your skin regularly for any new growths, sores, skin ulcers and any new or changing moles.  The changes may be harmless but it important to err on the side of caution as skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland.

Enjoy the sun!
